Are fiber and welded wire mesh (WWM) equal in strength?
—JG
Dear JG,
Well, there really isn’t an answer to that question. You
see, each product does different things. And different people
prefer one over the other. Sort of like do you prefer cheese
or pepperoni pizza? Let’s take a look!
Fiber, or fibrous-reinforced concrete, manufacturers say
that their product protects concrete from early plastic shrinkage
cracking and increases impact resistance of the surface while
it improves the durability of the concrete.
WWM is a structural element in concrete that handles stresses
due to shrinkage. It also resists bending stresses due to
applied loads during and after the concrete cracks. And, it
restrains the concrete from developing wide and displaced
cracking (see the WRI’s TF 702705, “Innovative Ways to Reinforce
Slabs on Ground).
So, our suggestion is to decide what you need the product
to do, decide which you prefer and make your own educated
decision.
