Despite the economic downturn in other industries we are grateful that the construction business is going strong for our current and potential customers. Chicago reports a % increase in commercial construction and a % increase in residential year-to-date versus last year. In this issue we give you some pointers on capitalizing on that trend:

  • Make more money on ordinary patio and sidewalk jobs by dressing them up with colors and stamping products. (See the "What's New at MCA?" section on the front page)
  • Save valuable time and money on future jobs using a Soff-Cut early entry saw. (Check out the "Product Spotlight" section on the next page.)
  • Enter MCA's Sweepstakes for FOUR FREE White Sox or Cubs tickets by faxing in your "Play to Win" answers or a comment in the "What Do You Think?" section.
  • Keep tools running to keep your profits coming in. Doug Neumann, MCA Repair Specialist, takes over the "Ask Jimbo" section this quarter with a few no-brainers that keep you productive.

Speaking of Jim McGinnis -- you folks haven't challenged him recently with tough concrete-related questions. C'mon, help me out here - send in the tough ones--he can take it, right?

Have a great summer!

Hi, this is Doug Neumann filling in for Jimbo. I'm MCA's Repair Specialist with some easy maintenance tips that will help keep your cut-off saws workin' like a charm.

Since dirty air filled with dust is the #1 on-the-job threat for cut-off saws I recommend that you clean the filters on a DAILY basis. You know how to do this--just tap the pre-filter on a hard surface to get rid of all the dust that has collected. Make it a habit to do it right after the job is completed or before you pack up for the night.

If you're working in a lot of dust all day, you should do more! On the ever-popular popular Stihl TS-350 model, the three filters need to be cleaned in the following manner:

  1. Prefilter - Knock out the dirt by tapping it on your hand, ground or wall or use compressed air to blow out the loose dirt.
  2. Main Filter - Tap this filter on a hard surface to clean. Compressed air can be used too, but be aware that too much air can damage the integrity and effectiveness of the filter, since it's made out of paper.
  3. Auxiliary Filter - If you see dirt on this final filter the other two filters need to be replaced ASAP! Then install a new auxiliary filter, just be sure to install it with the top hat facing the rear of the machine, otherwise it doesn't do much good.

Here's a tip-- keep extra filters with you in case the current one can't be cleaned anymore or you don't have time to clean it. Storing those clean filters in a clear plastic zip-type bag makes them easy to find, use and keep handy. (Peter- If not all will fit, loose this paragraph)

Remember that dirty filters cause loss of power, increased fuel consumption, higher engine operating temperatures and overall shortened engine life. Clean those filters out DAILY!
