Happy summer to all!

We in the concrete construction industry are lucky to be enjoying yet another strong summer season of commercial and residential building as well as road and highway repair. In this quarter's Concrete Report MCA shares with you some great ideas and products for making the most out of this market demand - and ways in which MCA is working even harder to provide you with what you need and when you need it:

  • We can now offer you a better quality and broader line of fabricated rebar because of our Bar Wiser equipment. See What's New at MCA on the front cover for all the details.
  • Our survey last quarter let us know that not all of you are aware of MCA's tool repair service in our Elgin location. Read all about our Service Guy Extraordinaire, Doug Neumann, in our Spotlight on MCA Employees section on the back page to learn more about what we offer.
  • Staying safe on the job is always a priority for our customers. The Seasonal Scoreboard discusses harness products for fall prevention. This is an especially timely reminder since we all get so busy at this time of the year and may be tempted to forget safety precautions.
  • Be sure to read Ask Jimbo to learn the correct way to pour a wall against a deadman wall. (He went to the experts at Symons for help on this one!)

Again, we thank you for your business and wish you the best construction season possible.

One of the most profitable ways for any business to grow is to offer related products to the same customer base it already has. Another way is to be able to cost-effectively do the work that they had to subcontract out before.

Most concrete contractors already include damproofing or waterproofing of foundations in their bids to general contractors and developers. Most of them also farm out this work to a waterproofing subcontractor. Wouldn't it be great if the concrete contractor could do this work themselves and keep the extra profit? In addition, they could offer it proactively on tighter bids where the generals were going to sub it out on their own!

The Mar-Flex® Waterproofing System allows them to do just that. "Damproofing and waterproofing operations can be profit centers for concrete contractors," says Joe Owens, Midwest Regional Manager for Mar-Flex® Waterproofing Systems. Mar-Flex manufactures and distributes a complete equipment system package for this application, including installation of the equipment in your vehicle and jobsite application training.

With an investment in a dedicated vehicle and the equipment, a concrete contractor can "break-even" after damproofing about 250 foundations. With over half of the basements today being converted to lower living space, waterproofing at the time of construction is becoming more and more popular with new home buyers for future warmth and comfort. The system will pay for itself right around 150 waterproofing jobs.

"This operation does NOT require another full time worker, so the concrete contractor should be able to get more profit dollars with the same crew size," says Owens. "It's really a slam dunk for higher volume concrete contractors."

Your MCA Sales Rep will be glad to review the system and help you decide if it makes sense for you!
